Man’s Responsibility a Hedge of Protection to keep the enemy out

Sixth Day

Adam’s second responsibility in the Garden was to protect it with a hedge to keep the enemy out. God is still looking for men to build a hedge and stand in the gap.

Genesis 2:15

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

Previously we looked at the first misunderstanding in this verse. Now we will look at the second misunderstanding. To keep it does not mean he would be farming the garden. It meant to protect it. God gave Adam dominion over the earth. Everyone must protect their dominion.

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen. John 21:25

From the above verse we know that God did not tell us everything but all that we needed to know. So I conclude that when God told him to keep it He told him how to keep it.

Job knew how to keep his dominion. Satan complained to the Lord that He had a “hedge” about Job. Since everything was “very good” until the end of the 6th day the Lord knowing what was coming warned Adam.

Doesn’t it make good sense to be controlled by the Holy Spirit and pray for God’s direction in everything because He knows what is coming tomorrow?

In verse 15 we see two things Adam was to do.

  1. Be there
    1. The place of provision and pleasure.
    2. God’s enjoyment
    3. Stay there
  2. Protect it
    1. The delegated dominion for dominance.
    2. Man’s responsibility
    3. Stand there

And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. Genesis 2:19

Old Testament names described character. Is it likely that the Lord explained to Adam the nature of each animal as they passed by? King Solomon writes much about nature. They undoubtedly spent the day together but how Adam knew what to name the animals is up for debate. Animals have a nature that displays character qualities that fallen man should learn from.

The nature of the animals changed after the fall but there is still much we can learn about changing our character to conform to the character of Jesus.

Taking responsibility for your dominion will result in gaining more responsibilities and a larger dominion. The opposite is also true. After writing this I was convicted so before posting it I cleaned my desk and work area.

Is your dominion in order? How well protected is your dominion?
