Transforming bad experiences into joy building

A total make over is God’s desire for your life. He has something so much better than you can imagine but it requires the transformation of your mind, a new way of thinking.

Secular history tells us that the Apostle John was boiled in oil and exiled to the isle of Patmos. John gives us a different story.

Revelation 1:9

“I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

How are you telling your story? What is your translation of the events taking place in your life? Either way you tell the story John was on the isle of Patmos without any humans. One way is a pity party the other God is in control.

What lights your fuse? What are the triggers that send verbal missiles that you wish never happened?

Personality is the sum total of all of your responses to every kind of person or circumstance. The majority of your personality was formed by the time you were two years old. The rest of your personality was shaped through your life.

Character is the life changes that you make on purpose. They may be the result of

  • Personal evaluation
  • Praise note given by someone that cares
  • Preaching
  • Prodding

Nobody teaches a child to steel they have to be taught to be honest.

  • Negative circumstances usually trigger a bitter response that needs to be transformed to forgiveness.
  • Negative people usually trigger a judgmental response that needs to be transformed to praising.

Scars need a new meaning

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Financial
  • Volitional
  • Spiritual

My father was in the Navy during WW II on the battleship USS Arkansas. He was from Georgia and the brunt of many jokes until he changed the story. When they asked him how it felt to wear shoes he learned to respond: “much better after I learned to put some broken glass and rocks inside now I feel like I am at home.”

Business people make changes to their character for temporal gain. God says the believer has power to make eternal changes.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

If a business person without Christ can make changes for money don’t you believe that someone in Christ can change their character with the help of the Holy Spirit?

Are you stuck in a pity party with the same old story of blaming and making excuses? It is time to change your character by changing your story.

Who else wants to be Responsible so they can be Controlled by the Holy Spirit?

Inward and outward purity is required to walk with the Lord.

For the 25 hours prior to the High Priest going into the Holy of Holies he would read the Torah (that is what the Jews call the Law, Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible) to the other priests. If for any reason he could not read then the other priests would read to him. The goal was for him to be free of all sin. This required humility for him to confess all of his sins.

They believed that if he fell asleep he might have a bad dream that he would be responsible for dealing with and fail to do so.

Matthew 23

24  Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Today NT believers are not concerned about gnats and will eat camel any way you serve it up.

I Corinthians 6

19  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Since the High Priest was so concerned about going into a temple made with hands don’t you believe that we should be concerned about staying pure because we live in the temple that the Holy Spirit has made His home?

A few years ago a New Age bible put a reference note saying that the other priests would tie a rope around the High Priest’s ankle to drag him out in case he died while inside the Holy of Holies. There is no validity to that hoax. There is new furniture already made in Jerusalem for the next Temple. They pointed out that there is nothing in the Bible or any Jewish writings about putting a rope around his ankle. Check your sources and be careful of any information that you pass on.

It would be a good practice to go for a walk after the evening meal for a daily cleansing. It should be done early enough so that you can call anyone that God reveals before letting the sun go down upon your wrath.

The devil is a liar, a thief, and a murderer, the flesh is lazy, lustful, licentious, and has a lifestyle that creates our theology which is the essence of idolatry (“I did it my way”) and the world is not stupid but lost, confused by the crowd (because everyone is doing it), and blinded by the god of this world and their own bitterness, so I ask that you would:

Psalm 139

23. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Because I desire to stand as an example and go the other direction with your power and blessing I will:

  • Confess sins and thank Him for forgiveness
  • Claim the cross and thank Him for my place
  • Ask for the Spirit’s filling and thank Him for controlling

I John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Look at what it does not say:

  • Ask for forgiveness
  • Confess that you are a sinner
  • And the average believers blanket: forgive me for all my sins today.
  1. We are never told to ask God for forgiveness. If you ask then you should wait for an answer. He has already given the answer: you confess it the way He sees it and He forgives it.
    1. God has no cure for little white lies but lies need to be confessed. David was living a lie concerning Bathsheba.
    2. God has no cure for alcoholics (a humanistic disease with no virus or bacteria) but He cures drunkards who get honest with Him.
    3. Confessing that you are a sinner should have been done when telling God of your need of a saviour.
    4. Psalm 51 is David getting specific about the sin that he was confronted with. I need to be just as specific about any sin that God points out.

If you continue to go back to sins that have been dealt with then you are listening to the enemy. After confession tell Him thank you for forgiving you. If you have trouble with saying thank you then your faith is weak and needs to be confessed and dealt with by spending more time in the Bible.

Are you specific with your confessing? Are you grateful for all sins under the blood of Christ?

Designed for a Purpose

The first year I played Little League baseball I had the position of Left End. You might be thinking that sounds like a football position. No it was the left end of the bench. During practice I was a gofer: “go fer this and go fer that.”

The next year we were on vacation during tryouts. I ended up on the Farm League. The first day the first event was tryouts for pitcher. When my turn came they were amazed (and so was I) that every pitch I threw was a strike. Within a week they had transferred me to the number one team and they put me on as the pitcher Friday night under the lights with the grandstands full. I walked the first five batters and they relieved me. That was relief but it could have been better if I could had hid from the world somewhere.

When I was accepted without pressure I could perform. Under pressure I wilted quicker than a cut flower in the summer sun out of water.

Instead of working with me and training me they moved me to catcher a position that nobody wanted. Al Smith had been the catcher and he found excuses for not coming to the games. For that reason I did not like it either and felt trapped. Johnny Lassiter was a good left handed pitcher that had been trained.

We won first place that year. Johnny got the big trophy which he deserved and the rest of us received a silver plastic ball about ¾” in diameter. It is still around here somewhere but not in a prominent place. It is not a fond memory for me.

Years later while pastoring I was one of two pitchers on our church team. Once we played a team that was at the bottom of the league. Everyone on our team raised their batting average that night everyone but me because they did not play me that night. They explained that they were saving me other games.

In maturity my acceptance did not come as a result of my performance. I am accepted in Christ. God is using me in “other games.” A few years ago I read the eulogy of Johnny Lassiter. He had moved to Gainesville, FL and coached teams until the end of his life. Johnny learned the power of helping young people to learn acceptance.

God designed me for a purpose. Now I purpose to accept people as they are and at the same time help their performance. Jesus saved me just as I was. He has been very patient with my slow growth. I could not measure up then and I still cannot measure up to what He wants but when I allow Him to work through me it is a win for everyone.

Are you winning?

The Foundation of Life

Zec 12 1

Much of what I did failed until I came to faith in Christ. The pastor made the gospel clear and I prayed every week for five months. Then God revealed that I was just experiencing religion; a prayer without faith. That Sunday morning in November of 1971 I committed my soul to His keeping.

II Timothy 3:10

But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

The Bible is my foundation for doctrine and practice. The Bible is designed to change my life and transform me into the character of Jesus Christ.

Doctrine is the information I need so that I can make an application to my life.

Chapters 1-3 Doctrine

Chapters 4-6 Application

Ephesians simple outline

Chapters 1-3                Sit at His feet

Chapters 4-6:9             Walk by His side

Chapters 6:10-24         Stand in His battle

The key phrase in the book is “in Christ.”

As I find out more of who I am in Christ it empowers me for a more dynamic life.

II Timothy 3

16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

These writers were actually taking dictation as the Holy Spirit spoke to them. No other book makes that claim. We have many infallible proofs that prove that someone existing outside of time but seeing all of time told them what to record. Then it goes on to say that we can be fully equipped for good.

We have a copy of an Integrated Message

  •   66 books
  •   40 different penmen
  •   Written over 1,600 years
  •   Proof that the author lives outside of Time.

Are you sure you are building faith rooted in the word of God? Some tell me they prayed about it and feel good about it. How is that faith?
